Management plans
Preamble
There is considerable information on the factors that influence the health and productivity of the lakes. There are some management options that can be used to select priority interventions to address the factors that influence the lakes. There are also some governance systems at global, continental, regional and national levels that can be applied to manage the influencing factors. What is required is to assess the status of the influencing factors on individual lakes, prioritize management options and interventions for different lakes and use this to prepare a management plan to be implemented to promote sustainable use of the resources of the lakes. ...
This sections examines the extent of the influencing factors on individual lake, prioritized management options, and proposes priority interventions that can be used to prepare management plan to be implemented the lake. The prioritization was based on the information generated so far on influencing factors and will be improved with additions information. The system is expected to allow for comparisons between lakes.
Management interventions on an individual lake have been arrived at on the basis of the relative intensity of the different influencing factors. The extent to which the influencing factors manifests in a lake depends on geophysical characteristics of the lake such as depth, area, catchment characteristics, and associated rivers Table of geophysical characteristics but these do not change overtime. This analysis limited to the influencing factors under four broad categories which change overtime namely: Demographic characteristics; Fishes and fisheries; The lake habitat; and Basin characteristics; and Governance systems. Management interventions for a lake were arrived at on the basis of the status of the influencing factor in a lake and the relative importance of management option for that factors in the lake. The priority management intervention for a lake can be used to prepare a management plan to be implemented on a lake. The relative importance of management options was based an arbitrary four scale assessment of the intensity of the management option on each lake. This will be refined as this process proceeds
Table of relative importance of management options in different lakes based on a four scale assessment based on information under influencing factors (3 = high; 2 = moderate; 1 = little; 0 = not applicable)
